DUKE NUKEM FOREVER!

Hail to the King Baby?

Not so much.

It’s been 15 years since the last Duke Nukem game, and the latest in the franchise, Duke Nukem Forever, hit store shelves yesterday after 14 years in development hell. So, how has “The King” aged, and has it been worth the wait?

When Duke Nukem Forever was announced back in 1997, gamers were stoked. It was going to be a direct sequel to one of the biggest games of the mid 90′s. And so we patiently waited.

And waited…

And waited…

We were teased in ’99 with game play footage, and promises of a launch date that yet again kept getting pushed back further and further until finally the developer 3d Realms simply stated “It’ll be released when it’s done”

Flash forward 11 years, and 2 game developers later, and we finally got what we thought was a firm launch date of May 3rd 2011. Pre-orders were sold, gaming websites claimed light at the end of the tunnel for dear old Duke. But then the predictable happened… another delay. Luckily it was only going to be about a month, so everyone was pretty okay with the whole situation.

Finally, yesterday, after 14 years of waiting Duke Nukem Forever was launched… and promptly slaughtered by the gaming industry.

I rented the game yesterday, took it home and popped the disc into my x-box with visions of the glory that I remembered from my childhood dashing through my head. A sleek, cool, badass hero armed to the teeth who spouted catchphrases while creating mayhem.

What I got on the other hand was a dinosaur of a game. A game that tried to make fun of what the First Person shooter genre has become, but just came off looking hypocritical.

Duke Nukem Forever is a game with clunky controls, and dated design that’s about 1o years too late.

The game does have some redeeming qualities mind you. It’s got that old Duke Nukem humor going for it, plus the nostalgia value alone makes it worth giving it a try, but I will give you one warning: RENT THE GAME BEFORE YOU BUY IT. For this game a $10 rental fee is easier to stomach than the $60 price tag.

Walking in winter wonderland

With a fair bit of snow on the ground, and more on the way for this weekend, I thought I’d take some time to talk about something that I see all too often around the north end of Brockville. I’m sure we’ve all seen this, and I know that I myself have been guilty of it too. It seems like every time we have a snow fall I always see at least one person foregoing the sidewalk and instead strolling right down the side of the road.

If the sidewalk hasn’t been plowed yet, and the road is looking clear, STICK TO THE SIDEWALK! Seriously, it’s the safest bet. Yeah you pant legs might get a little wet, but come on, damp pants are better than broken legs when you get nailed by a car that slides out of control. The last time we had a heavy snow fall I was heading into the radio station and there was a guy walking down the middle of the road, seriously like 8 feet from the curb. Better still, the dude was wearing a ski jacket that had a winter camo pattern on it. The funny thing about this was that the sidewalks on either side of the road had been recently plowed!

Remember, if you HAVE to walk on the road, stick as close to the curb as you can, and make sure what you’re wearing is easily seen. Shockingly, a greyish jacket blends in quite well with greyish snow on the road, especially when there’s more snow coming down.
